Cockspur Handles

Cockspur Handles

Cockspur handles are a traditional type of window handle commonly found on older uPVC, aluminum, and some timber casement windows. They are a simple latch and catch mechanism used to secure the window closed.

How They Work:

  • A cockspur handle has a distinctive “spur” or nose that, when the handle is turned (usually 90 degrees), hooks over a wedge-shaped block (the “catch” or “striker”) that is fixed to the window frame.
  • This action pulls the window sash tightly against the frame, creating a seal.

Key Features:

  • Simple Mechanism: Their design is straightforward and easy to understand.
  • External Locking: The locking mechanism is external, relying on the spur engaging with the wedge. Some cockspur handles also come with a key for added security.
  • Left and Right-Handed Options: Cockspur handles are typically available in left-hand and right-hand versions to suit the window’s opening direction. The “handing” is determined by which way the handle needs to turn to lock the window.
  • Step Height: A crucial measurement for replacement is the “step height.” This is the distance from the base of the handle to the underside of the spur. It needs to match the height of the wedge on your frame to ensure a proper, tight closure. Common step heights range from around 9mm to 21mm or more.
  • Fixing Centers: You’ll also need to consider the distance between the screw holes on your existing handle to ensure a new one will fit. Common fixing center measurements are 38mm and 58mm.
  • Materials and Finishes: They are available in various materials like uPVC, aluminum, and zinc alloy, with finishes such as white, black, chrome, satin, and gold to match different window styles.
